Dr.-Vogelgesang-Klamm
Austria's second-longest gorge in Spital am Pyhrn
The Dr. Vogelgesang Gorge, located in Spital am Pyhrn, Upper Austria, is the longest gorge in the region and the second longest in Austria. Spanning over 1.5 kilometers from the ticket office (and 2.7 kilometers from Parking Lot 2), the site features a wild, romantic landscape characterized by falling water and steep rock faces. The path includes approximately 500 wooden and stone steps, making it a physically engaging experience for visitors.
The gorge is named after Dr. Moritz Vogelgesang, the local physician and head of the local improvement club who was instrumental in its development and exploration. This historical connection adds cultural depth to the natural setting. The site is accessible to visitors of all ages and allows pets, making it a family-friendly destination. Opening hours are generally from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, though specific ticket inquiries can be made via phone.
The gorge serves as a significant starting point for longer hiking adventures. It connects to the international E 601 long-distance trail and offers access to a 5-hour hut-to-hut trek that includes stops at the Bosruckhütte, Rohrauerhaus, and Hofalm. These alpine huts provide amenities for rest and refreshment, allowing hikers to enjoy local specialties before descending back to Spital am Pyhrn. The combination of natural beauty, historical significance, and connectivity to broader hiking networks makes the Dr. Vogelgesang Gorge a notable destination for outdoor enthusiasts in Upper Austria.
