Graz
UNESCO World Heritage city with castle hill and modern art
Graz, the capital of Styria, is a city where history and modernity coexist in a unique harmony. Located approximately 155 kilometers south-southwest of Vienna, Graz is the second-largest city in Austria and the cultural heart of the Styrian region. Its history dates back to the Celtic and Roman periods, but it truly flourished under the Habsburgs, particularly during the reign of Archduke Charles II in the 16th century, who transformed it into a Renaissance center. The city's historic center, or Altstadt, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its intact medieval street plan and diverse architectural styles ranging from Gothic to Baroque. The atmosphere is lively and intellectual, fueled by the presence of the University of Graz and a vibrant student community. Graz is also known for its innovative urban planning, exemplified by the Kunsthaus, a postmodern art museum that contrasts sharply with the traditional buildings around it.
The main attractions of Graz are diverse and engaging. The Schlossberg is the city's most iconic landmark, a forested hill in the center of the old town. Visitors can take a funicular railway or walk up to the top to see the Uhrturm (Clock Tower), the Pummerin bell, and the ruins of the former fortress. The views of the city and the surrounding hills are spectacular. The Old Town itself is a maze of narrow streets, squares, and historic buildings, including the Town Hall, the Franciscan Church, and the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II. Eggenberg Palace, located on the outskirts, is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and a UNESCO site in its own right, featuring magnificent gardens and a museum. The Kunsthaus, with its alien-like facade, houses contemporary art and offers a rooftop terrace with panoramic views. Other notable sites include the Murinsel, an artificial island in the Mur River designed by Vito Acconci, and the Styrian State Museum.
Graz offers a wide range of activities for visitors. The city is a food lover's paradise, with a strong emphasis on local Styrian produce, including pumpkin seed oil, wine, and sausages. The local markets, such as the Lendkai Market, offer fresh produce and delicacies. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the many parks and green spaces, including the Eggenberg Park and the Murinsel. In winter, the nearby mountains provide opportunities for skiing and snowboarding. The city also hosts numerous festivals, including the Grazer Festwochen and the Kunsthaus Festival, showcasing music, theater, and visual arts. Cycling is a popular way to explore the city, with numerous bike paths along the Mur River.
Getting to Graz is convenient via rail and road. The city is well-connected by train, with frequent services from Vienna, Salzburg, and Munich. The journey from Vienna takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Graz Airport offers domestic and some international flights. Within the city, a network of trams and buses provides efficient public transportation. The old town is largely pedestrianized, making it easy to explore on foot.
The best time to visit Graz is from mid-June to early September for warm weather and outdoor activities, particularly enjoying the parks and riverfront. May and September also offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making them suitable for sightseeing and cultural visits. Winter is cold but offers a festive atmosphere with Christmas markets.
