Hohe Tauern National Park, located in the heart of the Austrian Alps, is the largest protected area in Central Europe, covering 1,856 square kilometers across the states of Salzburg, Carinthia, and Tyrol. As Austria’s largest national park, it offers visitors a pristine landscape defined by high summits, including the Großglockner, the country’s highest peak, alongside glaciers, rushing glacial streams, and lush alpine meadows. The park’s biodiversity is exceptional, hosting over one-third of Austria’s plant species and half of its mammal, bird, reptile, and amphibian populations.

Visitors can explore the park through various means, from hiking on foot to utilizing national park taxis for access to remote valleys. The National Park Centre in Mittersill serves as an educational hub, offering insights into the region’s ecology. Ranger programs provide guided experiences, particularly in winter when snowshoe hikes offer a quiet alternative to large-scale skiing. The Großglockner High Alpine Road, a toll road open from May to October, provides panoramic views for those traveling by vehicle.

The park is divided into a strict core zone and an outer zone where alpine farming is subsidized to preserve the traditional landscape. While summit attempts require experienced guides, many areas are accessible for independent exploration. Wildlife sightings of ibex, chamois, and golden eagles are common in their natural habitats. Accommodation and regional products are available in surrounding areas like Mölltal, supporting local economies. The park remains open year-round, though activities shift significantly with the seasons, offering a serene winter experience or a vibrant summer adventure. There are no general admission fees for entering the park itself, though specific attractions like the High Alpine Road charge tolls.
