Kamptal Wine Region
Lower Austria's K2, famed for Grüner Veltliner and Riesling
The Kamptal Wine Region is located in Lower Austria, specifically in the Waldviertel area within the Kamp-Manhartsberg Valley. Named after the Kamp River, the region is situated north-east of the Wachau and east of the Kremstal. Langenlois serves as the heart of the wine region, hosting nearly 300 wineries across 9,000 acres of vineyards. The area is easily accessible by train or car, approximately one hour from Vienna.
Kamptal is renowned for producing high-quality Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, benefiting from diverse terroir that includes loess, gravel, crystalline intrusions, and red sandstone. From the 2025 vintage, many wines will be certified organic or "Sustainable Austria." The region is often referred to as the "K2" of Austrian wine, acknowledging its significant status second only to the Wachau. Visitors can explore specific highlights such as Weingut Bründlmayer, established in 1980, and Schloss Gobelsburg, a baroque castle with ancient wine history.
As a tourist destination, Kamptal offers a less crowded experience compared to neighboring regions, attracting fewer international tourists. Beyond wine tasting, the area features museums, shops, restaurants, and outdoor activities. The landscape is characterized by rolling meadows, cliffs, and terraced vineyards. There are no general admission fees for the region itself, but individual wineries and attractions may have specific opening hours and entry costs. Travelers can enjoy an iconic food and wine experience in this under-discovered yet highly successful wine-growing area.
