Ötschergräben
Deep gorges and 90m waterfalls in Lower Austria
The Ötschergräben, located in the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park in Lower Austria, is a popular hiking destination often referred to as "Austria's Grand Canyon." This unique gorge system was formed by the Ötscherbach stream and features rugged rocks, well-surfaced hiking paths, and three significant waterfalls: the Lassingfall, Mirafall, and Schleierfall, which reach heights of up to 90 meters. The area is free to enter, with no admission fees required for access to the gorges and trails.
The site is open from May 1 to October 31, closing during the winter months from November 1 to April 29. Hikers can start and finish their journey at either the Lassingfallstubn in Wienerbruck or the Erlaufstausee-Schenke in Mitterbach. Wienerbruck is a popular starting point for circular routes, while Lackenhof offers access to the Ötscherlift cable car, which can be used for high-altitude trails or a direct descent into the gorges. The Ötscherlift operates primarily in winter for skiing but has limited hours in summer.
The landscape offers spectacular views of deep-cut gorges, roaring waterfalls, and clear streams. Various hiking routes are available, including the waterfall trail and the Teichalm route, catering to different levels of difficulty. Shelters and viewpoints are scattered along the paths, providing rest stops and scenic perspectives. The area is managed by the Naturpark Ötscher-Tormäuer, and further information, including maps and tour suggestions, can be found at www.mostviertel.at/oetschergraeben. For inquiries, contact the park via phone at +43 2728 21100 or email at info@naturpark-oetscher.at. The Ötschergräben provides a distinct natural experience, combining geological interest with accessible hiking infrastructure.
