A full day exploring the picturesque town of Dürnstein, visiting the iconic light-blue abbey tower, hiking to the ruins of Dürnstein Castle for panoramic views, and enjoying local Wachau wines and apricot liqueur.
Visit Dürnstein Abbey and the Blue Tower
Start your day at the heart of the village. Admire the distinctive light-blue Baroque tower of Dürnstein Abbey, one of the most photographed landmarks in the Wachau Valley. Explore the interior if open, and wander the surrounding square.
Hike to Burgruine Dürnstein (Castle Ruins)
Take a steep but short hike up from the town center to the ruins of Dürnstein Castle. This is the site where King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. The ruins offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Danube River and the terraced vineyards of the Wachau.
Stroll Through the Old Town
Descend back into the charming pedestrian-only old town. Browse local boutiques, admire the colorful Baroque houses, and visit the small museum if interested. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
Traditional Lunch at a Local Heuriger
Enjoy a classic Austrian lunch at a traditional wine tavern (Heuriger) or a restaurant in the town center. Try local Wachau specialties such as apple strudel, potato salad with smoked salmon, or a hearty schnitzel. Pair your meal with a glass of local Grüner Veltliner or Riesling.
Wine and Apricot Liqueur Tasting
Visit a local family-run winery or tavern for a tasting session. Sample various Wachau wines and try Marillenbrand (apricot brandy) or Marillenschnaps, a local specialty made from the region's famous apricots.
Relax along the Danube Promenade
Take a leisurely walk along the Danube River path. Enjoy the scenic views of the river, the opposite bank, and the surrounding vineyards. This is a perfect time for photos and relaxation before departing.
