One-day exploration of Austria's youngest capital
Explore Austria's youngest provincial capital, combining its historic baroque old town with modern architectural marvels like the Klangturm and the Viehofner lakes.
Visit the Cathedral of St. Pölten
Start your day at the impressive Domkirche St. Pölten. This baroque cathedral, built in the 18th century, features stunning frescoes and a rich history as the seat of the diocese. Admire the architecture and the peaceful interior.
Stroll through the Old Town and Landhaus
Walk through the pedestrian zone of the old town. Visit the Landhaus (Provincial Government building) with its beautiful courtyard. Enjoy the baroque facades and the lively atmosphere of the city center.
Climb the Klangturm (Sound Tower)
Head to the Klangturm, a 36-meter-high steel tower designed by Peter Pilz. Take the elevator to the top for panoramic views of St. Pölten and the surrounding Waldviertel region. The tower also features an acoustic installation.
Lunch in the City Center
Enjoy a traditional Austrian lunch at a local café or restaurant near the main square. Try Wiener Schnitzel or a seasonal vegetable soup with fresh bread.
Relax at the Viehofner Lakes
Take a short walk or tram ride to the Viehofner Seen, a series of artificial lakes created from former gravel pits. It's a perfect spot for a peaceful walk, bird watching, or simply relaxing by the water. The area offers great photo opportunities.
Museum Niederösterreich (Museum Lower Austria)
Visit the Museum Niederösterreich, located in the former Jesuit church. It offers a comprehensive overview of the history, culture, and nature of Lower Austria. The building itself is an architectural highlight.
Dinner at a Local Gasthaus
End your day with dinner at a traditional Austrian Gasthaus. Try local specialties like Tafelspitz or Kaiserschmarrn. Enjoy the cozy ambiance and local wine.
Where to stay: St. Pölten has several hotels in the city center, such as Hotel St. Pölten or Pension am Dom. For a more local experience, consider guesthouses in the old town.
Getting around: The city center is compact and best explored on foot. The Klangturm and Viehofner Lakes are within walking distance or a short tram/bus ride. Public transport (Linienbus) is efficient for longer distances.
