Güssing Castle (Burg Güssing) is a historic hill castle located in Burgenland, Austria, perched on a porphyry hill 293 meters above sea level. It offers panoramic views of the town and surrounding landscape. The site was first documented in 1157 when King Géza II assigned it to Count Wolfer of Wildon. Originally established as a Benedictine monastery, it was transformed into a stone fortress around 1180 by Béla III, King of Hungary. Its strategic location near the border between Hungary and the Holy Roman Empire made it a pivotal stronghold during the High Medieval period. The castle survived the Mongol invasion (1241–1242) and a siege by Ottokar II of Bohemia (1273).

Extensive restoration and reconstruction took place between 1982 and 2000 to preserve its historical authenticity. The castle currently functions as a museum focusing on history and anthropology. Admission is free, and the site includes a tour of the castle museum. Opening hours are typically Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. However, visitors should note that the museum may be temporarily closed; for example, it was listed as closed on July 13, 2026. Contact information is available via telephone at +43 3322 43400.

The site serves as a significant cultural landmark in Burgenland, reflecting the region’s complex medieval history. The well-preserved structure allows visitors to engage with the architectural and historical legacy of the area. The elevated position provides a practical vantage point for observing the local geography. This setting offers a quiet and educational experience for those interested in medieval fortifications and regional heritage.
