Burgenland
Austrian wine region with Lake Neusiedl and steppe landscapes
Burgenland, located in the far east of Austria, is a region of profound historical and cultural significance. Historically part of the Kingdom of Hungary for centuries, it became part of Austria only after World War I, a fact that still influences its demographic and cultural makeup. The region’s history is marked by its strategic location on the border, leading to a mix of Hungarian, Croatian, and Austrian-German traditions. This multicultural heritage is evident in the local cuisine, architecture, and festivals. The capital, Eisenstadt, serves as the cultural heart of the state, boasting a rich musical legacy as the former residence of the Esterházy family and the workplace of Joseph Haydn. The Esterházy Palace, with its magnificent gardens and concert hall, remains a testament to the region’s aristocratic past.
The most distinctive feature of Burgenland is Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedler See), a large shallow lake that forms the border with Hungary. It is the largest endorheic lake in Central Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The lake and its surrounding reed beds are a critical habitat for birds, hosting over 270 species, including flamingos, pelicans, and herons. The area is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The surrounding landscape, known as the Steppeland, is flat and open, dotted with vineyards and small villages. The wine region of Burgenland is famous for its white wines, such as Welschriesling and Grüner Veltliner, as well as its red wines, including Blaufränkisch. The town of Rust is particularly renowned for its sweet dessert wines, produced using a unique method involving noble rot. The wine cellars in Rust, carved into the rock, offer tastings and insights into this centuries-old tradition.
Beyond wine and nature, Burgenland offers a variety of activities. Cycling is a popular way to explore the region, with numerous well-marked trails connecting vineyards, lakes, and historic towns. The Lake Neusiedl Cycle Path is a favorite among tourists, offering scenic views of the water and reeds. Hiking in the Burgenland Alps provides more rugged terrain, with trails leading through forests and up to panoramic viewpoints. The region also boasts several spas and thermal baths, taking advantage of the natural hot springs found throughout the area. Cultural attractions include the Haydn House in Rohrau, the birthplace of the composer, and the various museums dedicated to local history and art. The annual Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt attracts classical music lovers from around the world.
Getting to Burgenland is convenient via rail and road. Eisenstadt is well-connected to Vienna by train, with frequent services taking approximately 40 minutes. Buses and cars provide access to other parts of the state, including the lake region and the western hills. The region is also accessible from Hungary and Slovakia, making it a cross-border destination. For those driving, the A4 motorway connects Vienna to the region, with easy access to major towns.

Summer is warm and sunny, perfect for swimming in Lake Neusiedl and enjoying outdoor festivals. Autumn is particularly attractive for wine lovers, as the harvest season brings vibrant colors to the vineyards and numerous wine festivals.
