Lockenhaus Castle is a historic rock fortress in central Burgenland, Austria, with roots dating back to the 13th century. Originally built around 1200 as a protective stronghold, it was first documented in 1242. The castle was historically owned by noble families, including the Counts of Güssing and the Esterházy family. Since 1968, it has been managed by the Prof. Paul Anton Keller Foundation, which has lovingly restored the site.
Today, the castle serves as a multifaceted cultural destination. It offers immersive medieval experiences, including knights' games, theatrical performances, and themed meals. Key features include the "Friends of the Night" exhibition and guided tours dedicated to the castle’s nursery roost of Geoffroy's bats, which is the largest colony of this species in Central Europe. Admission is €13 per person, or free for holders of the Burgenland Card (valid from April 1, 2026, to November 30, 2026), though this benefit excludes guided tours and special events.
The site hosts annual cultural events such as the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, the Dracula Event Theatre, and the Knights & Family Festival. Visitors can also stay overnight in exclusive castle rooms or the adjoining Castle Hotel. However, travelers should note that the castle is currently closed to visitors. When open, the site provides a structured environment for exploring medieval history and local wildlife. The combination of historical architecture, cultural programming, and natural heritage makes Lockenhaus Castle a distinct destination in Burgenland.
