The Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II in Graz is an imperial burial site located directly adjacent to the Graz Cathedral. Commissioned by Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II and designed by court artist Giovanni Pietro de Pomis, the structure is a prominent example of Florentine-inspired architecture, distinguished by its striking turquoise domes that contribute significantly to the city’s skyline. The mausoleum serves as the final resting place for Ferdinand II, who died in 1637, and his first wife, Maria Anna of Bavaria, who passed away in 1616.

Visitors can explore the interior, which features intricate stucco work and frescoes, at no cost. The site is free to enter, making it an accessible cultural stop within the historic center. Regarding access, the mausoleum is open from April through October, operating from Tuesday to Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. During the winter months, the interior is not regularly open to the public; however, guided tours are available by prior arrangement through the Diocesan Museum.

The location next to the cathedral places it in the heart of Graz’s religious and historical district. Travelers are advised to arrive early to avoid potential crowds and to fully appreciate the architectural details. The mausoleum offers a quiet contrast to the bustling city center, providing insight into the Habsburg dynasty’s legacy in Styria. Its unique design and historical significance make it a notable destination for those interested in Baroque architecture and imperial history. For specific winter tour inquiries, contacting the Diocesan Museum is recommended.
