Prater Park
Historic 6-hectare park with iconic 1873 Ferris wheel
Prater Park in Vienna is a historic recreational area spanning 6 square kilometers in the city’s second district. Originally established as a hunting ground for the Habsburgs in 1162, it was opened to the public by Emperor Joseph II in 1766. This transformation turned the area into a popular social hub, eventually evolving into the "Wurstelprater," known for its amusement rides and eateries. The 1873 World Exhibition further boosted its profile, leaving lasting landmarks such as the Rotunda.
Today, the park offers a blend of urban amusement and nature. Entry to the Prater and the Wurstelprater amusement area is free, and the grounds are accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. While the park itself is always open, specific attractions operate on seasonal schedules. From March 15 to October 31, most rides and businesses are open daily. During the winter season (November 1 to March 14), operations may be limited by weather, though major attractions like the Vienna Ferris Wheel (Riesenrad), Madame Tussauds, the Kingdom of Railroads, and the Rollercoaster Restaurant remain open year-round with set schedules.
Visitors can enjoy a mix of adrenaline-pumping rides and peaceful green spaces. The iconic Ferris Wheel offers panoramic views of the city. Individual attractions require separate payment, with prices varying by ride. The park serves as a significant cultural landmark, reflecting Vienna’s history of public leisure and entertainment. It provides a versatile environment for relaxation, sports, and family activities, maintaining its status as a central gathering place for both locals and tourists.
