12th-century castle with 800 years of history
Bernstein Castle, located in the Burgenland region of Austria, is a historic fortress with 800 years of history, featuring stone walls dating back to the 12th century. The castle is famously associated with László Almásy, the pilot and explorer known as the subject of The English Patient. Today, the site operates as a family-run hotel with nine individually themed rooms, but it also welcomes visitors interested in its historical and cultural significance.
Guided tours are available for non-hotel guests from May 1 to October 5, running Wednesday through Sunday and on national holidays at 11:00 AM. These tours provide access to key areas of the castle, including the fortifications, the castle garden, the chapel, and the Renaissance banquet hall. The tours offer insight into the castle’s defensive past and its architectural evolution.
The castle is situated in a scenic area surrounded by forests, offering views of the Hungarian lowlands and southern Styria. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and explore the grounds. The site also offers wine tastings featuring Central and Eastern European varieties, adding a cultural dimension to the visit. The combination of historical architecture, natural beauty, and local culinary traditions makes Bernstein Castle a unique destination. For those interested in history and architecture, the guided tours provide a structured way to experience the site’s rich heritage.
