Schloss Bernstein (Bernstein Castle)
12th-century castle, family-run hotel, and guided tours
Schloss Bernstein, located in the Burgenland region of Austria, is a historic fortress with over 800 years of history, featuring stone walls dating back to the 12th century. The castle is currently operated as a small, family-run hotel by the Almásy family, who serve as custodians of its cultural heritage. The property is most famously associated with László Almásy, the pilot and explorer known as the subject of The English Patient.
For visitors, the castle offers guided tours from May 1 to October 5, running Wednesday through Sunday and on national holidays at 11:00 AM. Entry for non-hotel guests is permitted only during these scheduled tours. The hotel itself is open from May 1 to October 26. The accommodation consists of nine individually decorated rooms, each named after historical figures connected to the castle.
The venue hosts various cultural events, including concerts, workshops, and weddings. Guests can also participate in an oenological experience featuring wines from Central and Eastern Europe. The castle is situated in a scenic area, accessible via public transport, with travel times of approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes from Vienna and 1 hour and 30 minutes from Graz. The combination of historical architecture, cultural events, and wine tasting provides a unique experience for travelers interested in the region's heritage.
