Local Alpine Pastures (Almen)
Carinthian almen with dairy, lake, and hiking
Local Alpine Pastures (Almen) in the Gail valley around Hermagor offer a quintessential Carinthian summer experience. An Alm is a managed mountain pasture where livestock graze during the summer months, providing visitors with sunny terraces and panoramic views of the Carnic main ridge. These locations serve as cultural hubs where travelers can enjoy traditional regional cuisine, including fresh dairy products, farmhouse bacon, and homemade cake.
The Alm season typically runs from mid-June to mid- or late September. While some pastures are easily accessible by car via toll forest roads, others require hiking via quiet forest paths. Two notable examples include the Egger Alm, located at approximately 1,430 meters. This family-friendly destination features a wide high plateau, a small mountain lake, and an on-site dairy where visitors can purchase fresh alpine cheese. It is accessible by car from Tröpolach or Watschig and is open from mid-June to the end of September.
Another key location is the Tressdorfer Alm, situated at about 1,450 meters. This pasture offers wide meadows and a traditional hut, serving as a popular hiking destination in summer and a small family ski area in winter. Accessible via the Tressdorfer Höhenstraße from Tröpolach, it is noted for its ease of access, making it suitable even for inexperienced walkers. The Tressdorfer Alm operates from mid-June to September in the summer and from December to March in the winter.
Visitors are advised to call ahead during shoulder seasons or on weekdays, as opening hours can vary. These alpine pastures provide a peaceful environment to experience local agricultural traditions and natural beauty, combining physical activity with culinary enjoyment.
