Mooserboden Reservoir
High-altitude hydroelectric reservoirs at 2,040m
The Mooserboden Reservoir, located in Kaprun at an altitude of approximately 2,040 meters, is a significant hydroelectric facility and tourist attraction within the Hohe Tauern National Park. Situated alongside the Wasserfallboden reservoir, the site is surrounded by 3,000-meter peaks and serves as a key power station for the region. Direct access by private vehicle is prohibited; visitors must use transfer buses from a large parking garage at the end of the Kesselfallstrasse road. The shuttle journey takes about 15 minutes uphill, passing through narrow tunnels, with mandatory brake-cooling stops on the descent.
The reservoirs are accessible from early June until mid-October. Admission fees include access to the Electricity Adventure World, which features educational trails explaining hydroelectric generation. Visitors can explore the Electricity Trail, herb trails, and a children’s learning path. Recreational activities include hiking, via ferrata routes such as MOBO 107 on the dam, and the Höhenburg climbing area.
On-site facilities include the Bergrestaurant Mooserboden, which serves Austrian cuisine, and the Kiosk Mooserboden for snacks. For more remote needs, the Fürthermoar Alm offers hearty food and houses a local history museum, while the Heinrich Schwaiger Haus provides accommodation for experienced hikers. The area combines engineering marvels with natural beauty, offering a unique high-altitude experience. Visitors should check official websites for current bus schedules, as last departures typically occur around 4:00 PM, though this may vary by season.
