Fuschl am See

Fuschl am See sits on a plateau of moraine hills in the Salzburg Flachgau, at about 670 metres above sea level. The lake that gives the village its name, the Fuschlsee, is about four kilometres long and up to 66 metres deep, set in a bowl of forested hills with the Schober and Filbling ridges close by. The water is exceptionally clean and cold, which makes it popular for swimming in summer and a favourite with divers and fishermen. Its shores are mostly wooded, with a few meadows and landing stages.

The village is one of the smallest places in Austria, with around 1,500 inhabitants in the Salzburg-Umgebung district, and its centre is a few streets, a church, a handful of inns and hotels, and a lakeside promenade. It was historically an agricultural and fishing community, and until the nineteenth century the lake's char and whitefish were an important local resource. Tourism began in earnest after the Second World War, and since then the village has had a quiet, somewhat exclusive reputation. A small castle on the shore, now a hotel, has hosted famous guests, and the village has appeared in films.

The Fuschlsee Rundweg, the path around the lake, is the main activity. It runs for about 6.5 kilometres, mostly flat, through forest and along the shore, and takes around two hours on foot. Benches, landing stages and small beaches line the route. On the water, rowing boats and stand-up paddleboards can be hired, and swimming is possible from public bathing areas. Fishing requires a permit. In winter the lake sometimes freezes, and walkers and skaters may use it when the ice is safe, though conditions need checking locally.

The surrounding hills offer longer walks. A path leads up to viewpoints with long views of the lake and the Alps, and marked trails connect Fuschl with the neighbouring villages of Hof and Thalgau. The Gaisberg, a popular mountain on the outskirts of Salzburg, can be reached by road or on foot, and its summit has a panorama of the city and the Alps. The nearby Salzkammergut lakes, including Mondsee, Wolfgangsee and Attersee, are all within half an hour by car, and the village is a convenient base for exploring them.

For culture, Salzburg is the main draw; the Austrian festival capital lies a short drive away. The Salzburg Festival, held each summer, brings opera, theatre and concerts to the city, and many visitors stay in Fuschl for quiet evenings and easy parking. The Mozart family has connections to the lakes, and St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee, where Mozart's mother was born, is nearby. Concerts and church festivals take place in the village in summer.

A curiosity for visitors is that the Headquarters of Red Bull, the global energy-drink company, is located in Fuschl, with the company's buildings and facilities hidden among the hills. It is a private place, but it explains the presence of sports events in the region and a certain contemporary glamour.

Food is Salzburg and Salzkammergut cooking. Lake char, known as Saibling, is served grilled or fried in lakeside inns, and Salzburger Nockerl, Kaiserschmarrn and strudel are common desserts. Farms in the area sell cheese, smoked fish and honey.

The best time to visit is from June to September for swimming and walking, with July and August the warmest. May and September are calmer, and autumn colours are attractive around the lake. Winters are quiet and can be cold, but the setting has its own charm.

Getting there is easy by car: the village is about 25 minutes from Salzburg on the road toward Bad Ischl, and buses link it with the city. There is no railway station in the village; the nearest stations are at Salzburg and Thalgau. Salzburg airport is about 30 minutes away, which makes Fuschl a good option for visitors flying in who want a quiet lake base.
