Christkindl Pilgrimage Church (Wallfahrtskirche Christkindl)
Baroque church with 17th-century origins
Located just three kilometers from Steyr’s city center, the Christkindl Pilgrimage Church (Wallfahrtskirche Christkindl) stands as a significant Baroque landmark. The site’s origins trace back to 1695, when local legend holds that Ferdinand Sertl was cured of epilepsy after praying before a small wax figure of the Christ Child. This event established the site as a major pilgrimage destination, a status it maintains today through its unique architectural and cultural features.
The church itself, completed in 1725, features a high altar with a preserved trunk from the original devotional tree, linking the current structure to its historical roots. Inside, visitors encounter a richly decorated interior, including a mechanical nativity scene built by Karl Klauda, which moves using bicycle chain mechanisms, and an extensive wooden nativity by Ferdinand Pöttmesser featuring 778 individual figures. These detailed displays offer a unique visual experience that complements the spiritual atmosphere of the site.
For visitors, the church offers a distinct experience that changes with the seasons, particularly during Advent when the site becomes a focal point for local tradition. The on-site post office, operational since 1950, allows visitors to send letters with special postmarks, adding a personal touch to the pilgrimage. The combination of Baroque architecture, intricate craftsmanship, and deep religious tradition makes this a compelling destination for those interested in Austrian cultural heritage and religious history.
