Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe

Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, situated at 2,369 meters, is the highest point accessible by vehicle on the Grossgner High Alpine Road. Located directly above the Pasterze Glacier, this high-altitude destination offers panoramic views of the Hohe Tauern mountains, including the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak. The site serves as a major hub for visitors, combining natural beauty with educational facilities.

The central feature is the information center, which houses a 300-square-meter exhibition area. Here, visitors can explore the geology and ecology of the region through interactive displays, including a cinema with HD projection and Dolby sound that illustrates the dynamics of the alpine environment. The center is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 during the operating season, typically from mid-May to early October.

Outside the center, the landscape offers direct access to hiking trails, such as the Kaiser Franz Josef Panorama Trail. These paths allow visitors to explore the alpine flora and fauna, including ibex, chamois, and golden eagles, in their natural habitat. The site is named in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who visited the area in 1856 with Empress Elisabeth, a historical connection that adds cultural depth to the visit. Access to the high-alpine road requires a specific toll, but entry to the information center and the immediate viewing areas is free, making it an accessible destination for travelers exploring the Austrian Alps.
