Austria's 120 alpine pastures and historic cheese museum

7.5/10
#7 of 9 in Hittisau

Local Dairy and Alpine Pastures in Hittisau offer a deep dive into the region’s agricultural heritage. Hittisau boasts approximately 120 alpine pastures (Almen), the highest number of any community in Austria. This tradition became the area's primary income source around 1700, following a shift from grain farming to hard cheese production. The Alpsennereimuseum Hittisau, located in the town center, is dedicated to preserving this history. Housed in a historic cheese kitchen, the museum features approximately 80 exhibits demonstrating traditional milk processing and cheese-making techniques using historical tools.

Visitors can experience the craft firsthand through guided tours led by a master cheesemaker. These tours, which last approximately one hour, include a demonstration of traditional cheese-making and a cheese-tasting session. The museum also shows a film on current production methods. Access is strictly limited to guided tours, which are held every Wednesday at 10:00 AM. Visitors must register by 12:00 PM the day before the tour at the Hittisau Tourism Office.

The museum originally opened in 1980 and was relocated to its current site in 2011. It showcases the production of raw milk cheese, quark, and butter from unpasteurized milk. For those interested in the broader landscape, the surrounding alpine pastures provide a scenic backdrop to this cultural tradition. Travelers are advised to contact Hittisau Tourismus at +43 (0)664 2066823 for further details on registration and availability. This experience offers a unique insight into the sustainable farming practices that define the Bregenzerwald region.
