Rheindelta Nature Reserve

The Rheindelta Nature Reserve is located in Vorarlberg, Austria, near the town of Fußach. Situated at the mouth of the Old Rhine River into Lake Constance, this 2,000-hectare wetland area is the largest of its kind in the region. Established as a protected zone in 1976, it holds international significance under the Ramsar Convention and is part of the EU’s Natura 2000 network. The reserve is renowned for its high biodiversity, serving as a critical breeding and resting ground for approximately 330 bird species.

Visitors can explore the diverse landscapes, which include alluvial forests, wet meadows, reed beds, and sandy beaches. The Rheindeltahaus, the visitor center, operates from April to October on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 17:00. It is accessible at other times if unstaffed. The area offers scenic paths through the forest to the shore, providing opportunities for birdwatching and nature observation. The 'BirdsClub' app can enhance the experience by helping identify local wildlife.

Strict behavioral rules apply to protect the fragile ecosystem. Visitors must stay on marked paths, avoid closed water areas, not leave waste, use only designated fire pits, and keep dogs on a leash at all times. The reserve is managed by inatura Erlebnis Naturschau in Dornbirn. While there is no admission fee for the reserve itself, parking near the water is restricted to preserve the natural atmosphere. The Rheindelta offers a peaceful and mystical environment, particularly in misty weather, making it a significant destination for nature enthusiasts seeking to experience the unique flora and fauna of Lake Constance.
