#1 of 2 in Krems an der Donau

The Steiner Tor stands as the iconic symbol of Krems an der Donau, serving as the primary entrance to the city’s historic old town. Located at Südtirolerplatz, this preserved gate marks the transition between the Kremstal and the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau Valley. Originally constructed in the late 15th century, with records dating its establishment to 1480 under Emperor Friedrich III, the structure reflects centuries of architectural evolution. While the flanking towers retain their late Middle Ages character, the outer tower building was refashioned in the Baroque style during the reign of Maria Theresa in 1756.

Visitors passing through the gate enter a landscape defined by cobblestone streets, narrow alleyways, and baroque architecture, a testament to Krems’ long history as a trading hub for merchants and pilgrims. The site underwent significant restoration between 2005 and 2006 to celebrate the city’s 700th anniversary of rights, aiming to preserve its original appearance. A notable feature within the gate is a memorial on the inner door, which commemorates a devastating Danube flooding disaster in 1573.

The Steiner Tor is open to the public and offers a tangible connection to the past. From this vantage point, travelers can easily explore nearby landmarks, including the parish church of St. Veit, known for its striking tower façade, and the Piaristenstiege, which provides panoramic views of the old town. The gate’s location also places it within walking distance of other significant sites, such as the Gozzoburg castle and the Göttweig Abbey across the Danube. It serves as a welcoming gateway to one of Austria’s oldest cities, blending medieval heritage with modern accessibility.
