Rust

Rust, the Free City of Rust, is a municipality in the Eisenstadt-Umgebung district of Burgenland, Austria, situated on the northern shore of Lake Neusiedl. With a population of around 1,900, it is the smallest city in Austria by population, yet it holds a significant place in the country's cultural and historical landscape. The town's history dates back to the 13th century, when it was granted the status of a free city by King Béla IV of Hungary, a privilege confirmed by the Habsburgs. The best time to visit Rust is from early June to mid-September, when the weather is warm and ideal for outdoor activities and wine tasting. July and August are the peak months, with high temperatures and long days, perfect for enjoying the lake and attending wine festivals. Spring and autumn offer milder weather and fewer crowds, making them suitable for sightseeing and exploring the historic town. Winter is cooler and quieter, with some facilities closed, but the town retains a peaceful, rustic charm.
