Castle Courtyard

Lockenhaus Castle, located in the Geschriebenstein Nature Park in Burgenland, Austria, is the only remaining "real knight's castle" in the country. Built around 1200 in Romanesque and Gothic styles, the fortress sits at an elevation of 368 meters near the Güns Valley. The castle is managed by the Professor Paul Anton Keller Foundation, which has preserved the site since 1980 after it was acquired from private owners in 1968.

Visitors can explore the castle’s historic atmosphere, which includes a knight’s hall, a torture chamber, and a cult room. The interior features tasteful furnishings that reflect the castle’s medieval heritage. A unique feature of the castle is the attic, which houses one of the largest colonies of Geoffroy’s bats in Central Europe. This natural element adds a unique dimension to the visitor experience, highlighting the coexistence of history and wildlife.

The castle offers guided tours that cover its rich history, including legends of the Knights Templar and the infamous Blood Countess Elizabeth Bathory. Themed experiences, such as the "Armoury Experience" designed for children, make the site accessible and engaging for families. The castle also serves as a venue for events, weddings, and seminars, maintaining its role as a cultural hub.

The castle is open to the public as a tourist attraction. It is advisable to check current schedules before visiting. The site is accessible via express bus service along the Eisenstadter Bundestrasse, with a lake located immediately to its east.
