Eisriesenwelt (Ice Caves)
World's largest ice cave in Werfen
Eisriesenwelt, located in Werfen, Austria, is the largest ice cave in the world and a significant natural attraction. The site is open seasonally from May 1 to November 1, 2026. Visitors should note that the cave maintains temperatures below 0°C year-round, requiring warm clothing, including hats and gloves, as well as sturdy shoes for the tour.
Access to the cave involves a cable car ride and a climb of 134 meters in altitude, equivalent to a 40-story building. Due to these physical demands, the tour is not recommended for individuals with severe mobility issues, cardiovascular diseases, or small children. The experience requires good physical health and preparation for cold conditions.
Logistically, the visitor center cash desk operates from 8:30 to 15:00, while the cable car runs from 8:45 to 15:20. Cave tours are scheduled between 9:30 and 15:45. Admission prices range from €22 to €45 for adults and children. Because of limited capacity and the requirement for specific 30-minute entry slots, advance online booking is strongly recommended to avoid long waits. The cave offers a unique glimpse into a frozen underground landscape, distinct from typical karst caves due to its permanent ice formations. Visitors are advised to plan their visit carefully, considering both the weather conditions and the physical requirements of the tour.
