Festung Werfen, also known as Hohenwerfen Castle, is a 900-year-old fortified castle located on a rock above the Salzach Valley near Werfen, Austria. This historic site offers immersive Middle Ages experiences through various guided tours and demonstrations. The castle is a seasonal attraction, generally open from spring to late fall, with specific operating hours varying by month. From April 1 to November 2, the castle is open daily, except for Mondays in April, October, and November. During May through September, hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with extended hours until 6:00 PM from July 20 to August 21. In April, October, and November, the castle operates from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
Visitors can access the interior of the castle only via guided tours, which last approximately 50 minutes and include audio guides in multiple languages. These tours are suitable for children aged three and older. Additionally, the castle features bird of prey flight demonstrations, which are held several times daily, though no demonstrations are held in October. The all-inclusive ticket covers both the interior tours and the flight demonstrations.
The site is not accessible for wheelchair users. Dogs on a lead are welcome in outdoor areas and during flight demonstrations but are not permitted on interior castle tours, except for assistance dogs. Drone flights are prohibited. The castle serves as a popular family destination, combining historical education with engaging live performances. Visitors are advised to check the official schedule for specific tour and demonstration times, as they vary by season.
