Plansee Lake
Tyrol's second-largest crystal-clear alpine lake
Lake Plansee, located in the Reutte Nature Park Region of Austrian Tyrol, is the state’s second-largest lake and one of its cleanest, holding a Quality Class I rating. Measuring 6 kilometers in length with a maximum depth of 76.5 meters, the lake offers refreshing water temperatures of 17–21°C during the summer months. It supports a variety of water-based activities, including sailing, surfing, diving, swimming, and angling.
The lake is largely freely accessible for swimmers. However, from May 1 to October 31, a parking fee of €6 per car per day applies at specific areas, including the Hotel Forelle, camping/kiosk, sunbathing lawn, and Musteralpe. This fee includes access to the sunbathing lawn. Visitors can enjoy boat trips that connect Plansee to the neighboring Heiterwanger See via a narrow channel, providing a unique perspective of the region’s hydrology.
On-site amenities include refreshment stops, kiosks, and a children’s playground at the Sennalpe campsite. A notable cultural feature is the show dairy at the Musteralpe, where visitors can observe and learn about traditional cheese-making through guided tours. The area also features a palace that was opened to the public in 1886, adding historical interest to the natural landscape. These facilities ensure a comfortable experience for families and tourists. The combination of clear waters, recreational opportunities, and local agricultural traditions makes Lake Plansee a significant destination for nature lovers in Tyrol.
