Schloss St. Martin (St. Martin Castle)
Renaissance castle housing a museum and restaurant
Schloss St. Martin, also known as Kastell Stegersbach, is a historic Renaissance castle located in Stegersbach, Austria. Originally constructed as a fortress for the Counts of Güssing, the site was transformed into a castle in 1636 by Adam Count Batthyány, with design contributions from the Italian architect Orsolini. The structure features a distinctive two-story design with an elegant arcade and a vaulted cellar, reflecting its architectural heritage.
The castle has a rich history of changing uses. After being owned by the Szenteleky family, the municipality acquired the building in 1919. It initially served as a primary school and later functioned as a local museum, preserving the area's cultural history. Since 2013, following renovations, the building has been repurposed as a restaurant and event venue, known locally as "Gasthaus."
Visitors can explore the exterior of the castle to appreciate its historical architecture and the surrounding environment. The venue offers a 600-square-meter banquet hall, indicating its continued role as a community hub for events. The building remains a significant landmark in Stegersbach. The location benefits from the region's sunny climate, enhancing the visitor experience. For those interested in local history and architecture, Schloss St. Martin offers a tangible connection to the past. Travelers are advised to check with local tourism resources for current access details regarding the restaurant and event spaces, as the interior may not be open for general tourism at all times.
