Grazโ€™s Altstadt, or Old Town, stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its unique blend of medieval charm and modern energy. As the former European Capital of Culture in 2003, the area showcases a rich architectural tapestry, featuring structures from Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Visitors can easily navigate the historic streets, which are free to explore, offering an immersive experience into the cityโ€™s past without admission fees for the district itself.

The centerpiece of the Altstadt is the Schlossberg, a prominent hill in the city center that hosts Grazโ€™s most recognizable symbol, the Uhrturm (Clock Tower). Originally constructed as a defense tower in 1265, it was converted into a clock tower in 1569 to monitor for fires. The tower features a distinctive design quirk: the clock hands are reversed, with the larger hand indicating hours and the smaller one marking minutes, a result of the original design only requiring hour hands visible from a distance. This landmark survived the Napoleonic wars when locals famously paid a ransom to save it from destruction, preserving it as a key cultural icon.

Ascending the Schlossberg via its famous Gothic double spiral staircase offers panoramic views of the city. The area serves as a cultural hub, housing institutions like the Museum Styrian Armoury and History Museum, which are part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum network. While the Old Town itself is open to all, specific museums within the vicinity operate on set schedules, typically from 10:00 to 18:00. Exploring the Altstadt allows travelers to witness how Graz seamlessly integrates its historical heritage with contemporary urban life.
