Fohnsdorf

Fohnsdorf lies in the Murtal of Austria, the upper Mur Valley, at about 740 metres, on the edge of the Aichfeld, a broad, flat plain where the river widens before it turns toward Leoben. To the north, the foothills of the Seckau Alps rise toward peaks above 2,000 metres, and to the south the plain stretches toward the Gaberl and Stubalpe ranges. Far to the south-west, the Koralpe closes the horizon on very clear days. The climate in the basin is relatively mild, shielded from the north by the Alps.

The town's history is tied to the land and, later, to coal. The first record, from 1141, mentions a local fortress, and the settlement grew as a small market town with agriculture and craft. In the nineteenth century, the discovery of lignite, a brown coal, transformed Fohnsdorf into one of the biggest mining centres in Styria; thousands of workers lived in the town and in company housing, and the Fohnsdorf shaft became one of the deeper coal pits in Austria. The mine closed in 1978, which led to a long period of economic restructuring, and the town has since developed new sectors. The mining legacy is still visible in the street names, in old miners' houses and in the memory of the community.

The Therme Aqualux, a thermal bath opened in the early 1990s, is the town's main visitor attraction. It uses naturally warm water from deep wells and offers indoor and outdoor pools, saunas and wellness treatments, and it is popular with families and with people from the surrounding region. Outdoor recreation is the other attraction. Marked trails lead from the edge of town into the foothills of the Seckau Alps, from easy walks through meadows and forest to longer hikes toward the ridges. The Tremmelberg Observation Tower, on a hill above the town, offers views across the Aichfeld to the surrounding mountains, and the Rosenkogel summit nearby is recommended in local guides for a longer walk with views and fresh mountain air. The Tower is a short walk. Mountain biking and cycling are also popular, and the Mur River cycle route follows the river through the valley, linking Fohnsdorf with Judenburg and Leoben.

A short drive away is Seckau Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in the twelfth century, whose Romanesque basilica is among the most important in Styria and whose crypt holds the tomb of Archduke Charles II. The nearby Red Bull Ring at Spielberg, a motor-racing circuit that hosts the Austrian Grand Prix and MotoGP events, draws large crowds on race weekends and is a short ride away. The towns of Knittelfeld and Judenburg, with their old centres, are also close.

Food is Styrian. Pumpkin seed oil, Backhendl, Sterz, a cornmeal dish, and hearty soups are typical, and farms sell cheese, honey and bread. Local inns serve traditional dishes, and cafes offer cakes.

The best time to visit is from June to August for walking and swimming, with sunny weather and long days. May and September are quieter, and autumn colour on the slopes is attractive. In winter, the Seckau Alps offer ski touring and small slopes, and the thermal bath is a welcome warm retreat.

Getting there is straightforward. Fohnsdorf has regional rail connections on the line between Knittelfeld and Judenburg, with buses serving the town, and trains from Graz take about an hour and a half with a change. By car, the A2 motorway, the Süd Autobahn, and the S36 expressway lead toward the Murtal, with exits near the town, and Graz is about an hour away. Vienna is about two and a half hours.
