Bergfried (Watchtower)

12th-century castle with oldest garden in Burgenland

5.1/10
#5 of 6 in Bernstein

The Bergfried, or watchtower, is a central feature of Bernstein Castle in Burgenland, Austria. First mentioned in 1236, the castle’s stone walls were originally built in the 12th century to protect the local population from invaders. The Bergfried served as a vital defensive structure, acting as a watchtower and final refuge during sieges, rather than for permanent habitation. The castle has a resilient history, surviving numerous sieges, conquests, and fires, with its last hostile takeover occurring in 1445.

Today, the site is known for its historic garden, which is the oldest of its kind in Burgenland. After defensive structures became obsolete in the 17th century, the area was converted into a natural garden, offering visitors a peaceful place to stroll within the historic walls. The castle is also culturally significant due to its association with László E. Almásy, whose life inspired the book and Oscar-winning film The English Patient. Guided tours focusing on Almásy’s true story are available from May 1st to October 6th, running Wednesday through Sunday and on national holidays at 11 am.

Visitors can experience the blend of medieval architecture and natural beauty that defines the site. It is recommended to check with local tourism resources for current access details and ticket information for the garden and tours. The castle remains a key historical landmark in the region, offering insights into medieval life and its modern cultural legacy.
